The Battery EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) is a good source for generating revenue through recycling. Under this system, producers, importers, and brand owners in India who produce, import, or sell any type of battery are required to recycle a certain percentage of batteries every year. This rule is stipulated by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in the EPR Battery Waste Management Rules.

Under the EPR battery scheme, producers, importers, and brand owners must recycle the quantity of batteries specified in their EPR license issued by the Central Pollution Control Board before the end of each financial year.

Process of EPR Credit transfer in Battery

Once a recycler recycles the quantity of batteries specified in the EPR license of PIBO's, then it becomes the responsibility of recycler to transfer the corresponding EPR credits to the producer, importer, or brand owner.Only after, the recycler transfers the required quantity of EPR credits to the producer, importer, or brand owner will their compliance be considered complete.

For example, if a battery importer's target is 20 metric tons, as specified in their EPR license issued by the Central Pollution Control Board, it means that after recycling that quantity of batteries, the recycler must transfer 20 credits from their EPR portal to the importer's EPR portal. Only then will the annual EPR filing be considered complete.

Revenue Benifit to a Battery Recycler through EPR Credit in Battery

Interestingly, the recycler will not transfer these credits for free. The importer will have to pay a separate cost to the recycler for these credits. Currently, the rate for these credits is approximately ₹100 to ₹200 per kilogram of battery.  Therefore, EPR has become a good option for battery recyclers to generate revenue, a system implemented by the Indian government.
